Make sure you are familiar with the route and the traffic on it.\u00a0 Ride this route, taking all necessary safety precautions.\u00a0 While you are riding focus on the road and the vehicles around you.\u00a0 When you get finished write 500 words about your experience.\u00a0 Did you feel safe?\u00a0 What things made you feel safe?\u00a0 Were there things that made you feel unsafe?\u00a0 Was it enjoyable?\u00a0 What things made it enjoyable or not enjoyable?\u00a0 How did your route fit into Furth&#8217;s typology of different bicycle routes?\u00a0 How did you experience your environment?\u00a0 (If you have the ability, you might want to drive the same route and compare the experience of driving and biking.).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want you to do anything you are not comfortable doing.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/ral.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/mapviewer\/index.html?webmap=3ca6fb4a66394fd58638905abba6d621\">Here<\/a> is a bike map of Raleigh showing greenways and bike lanes.\u00a0 If you aren&#8217;t comfortable riding on roads, you can choose a route that is exclusively on greenways.\u00a0 Also if you don&#8217;t have a bike, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardinalbikeshare.com\/map\">Cardinal bike share app.\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Safety Tips:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>When you are bicycling, you should always wear a helmet and have rear light on your bicycle.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/transportation.ncsu.edu\/bike-safety-information\/\">Here<\/a> are the NCSU transportation office\u2019s safety guidelines on riding a bike in and around campus.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>While greenways keep you away from cars, they have their own risks.<br \/>\u2013Wooden planking can be slippery after the rain<\/strong><br \/><strong>\u2013watch out for other bikes and pedestrians.\u00a0 Pass on the left and give an audible signal.<\/strong><br \/><strong>\u2013on greenways be careful when you are going through tunnels.\u00a0 Call out \u201cbiker coming through\u201d (Sometimes there might be a biker coming in the other direction)<\/strong><br \/><strong>\u2013if you go east of Dorthea Dix park, I would advise you to go with another person<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As an example of a route that would be (almost) all on greenways, you could rent a bike at the Cardinal bikeshare docking station at Hillsborough St. and Horne, then cross Hillsborough St. and go through the NCSU campus to get on the Rocky Branch bike path, then go on the Gorman St bike connector, to the House Creek Trail by Meredith College and then after the tunnel, turn right to go up to Whole Foods. <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/s229uAfNZBGGWxM48\">Here<\/a> is a link to that basic route on Google Maps.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alternative Assignment<\/strong><br \/>If you are uncomfortable riding a bike, <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress-courses2425.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/sts-320-001-fall-2024\/alternate-assignment\/\">here<\/a> is an alternate way to do this assignment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Be prepared to discuss your findings in class on September 23.<a href=\"https:\/\/moodle-courses2425.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/mod\/lti\/view.php?id=271380\"> Submit through Moodle.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Read Peter Furth,&#8217;s &#8220;Bicycle Infrastructure for All,&#8221; in Cycling for Sustainable Cities.\u00a0 2.\u00a0 Find a 2-3 mile route that you are comfortable riding by bike.\u00a0 It would be ideal if it is a route that has some practical significance to you.\u00a0 (Route from home to school, to shopping&#8230;.).
