One tool that city planners and bike professionals use is a bike count.  The National Association of City Transportation Officials has a <a href=\"https:\/\/nacto.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Making_Bikes_Count_FINAL_March31-2022.pdf\">whole brochure<\/a> on bike counts.  While there are ways to automate this process (wires embedded in the street\/bike paths), having humans do a manual count of bikers is still an essential part of the process.  In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/transportation\/walking-biking-transit-safety\/bicycle-counts#toc-2024-summer-bicycle-counts\">city of Portland, OR<\/a>, each summer hundreds of volunteers are recruited to count the number of cyclists crossing various intersections.  On Thursday September 5 (tentative date) , we will do a count of the people biking between Centennial and Main Campus.  I will ask each student to volunteer for a one hour shift.  People whose schedule will not allow them to do a one hour shift will be given an alternate means of receiving credit for this assignment.<br>Sign up for a one hour shift <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1-GVISRzD3sBI32G5NYT_dLoiIFT99AjwisG412_bWvc\/edit?usp=sharing\">here<\/a>.  (Bring something to drink and wear a hat or sunscreen!) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing we want to try to do is to count ebikes.  <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress-courses2425.wolfware.ncsu.edu\/sts-320-001-fall-2024\/how-to-identify-an-e-bike\/\">How to identify an ebike. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our counts will focus on two intersections:  (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/edit?mid=1T5yOrqMKQnQHbPqWNThMgDAsZsj8LTU&amp;ll=35.77594370559666%2C-78.67295144208069&amp;z=16\">see them on a map)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Varsity Drive and Avent Ferry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Oval Drive\/Bilyeu and Centennial Parkway<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides just doing the actual count, be attentive to what you see (and note it on the sheets if you feel it is relevant).
