In Class Exercise–Race, Gender, Bike-Sharing and E-Bikes

Open a Google Doc here and write each member of your groups name on it.

  1.  Biking and Gender

You wake up and find yourself in an unknown city.  As you walk outside you find that there are twice as many men bicycling as women.  Do you have any ideas from the reading about where this would be?  Should we identify this as a “problem”?  Both men and women have access to bicycles and can bike if they want.   Should we try to do something to close this “gender gap”?  Is this a social justice issue?  Why?  What could we do? What does the reading suggest?

2.  Biking and Race
Two years ago the dean at CHASS had each department do an “Anti-Racism Audit” to look for ways that racism might exist in our College without people being aware of it. What would an “Anti-Racism Audit” of biking in a city–say Raleigh, look like?  How would you do it?   What things would you consider?

Here are websites of African-American bicycling advocacy groups.

Black People Ride Bikes–Baltimore

Black People Bike–St. Louis

Black Girls Do Bike

What do you think the purpose of these organizations are?  Why are they needed?  What do you see in them?

3.  Bike Share Systems

Your team is considering a bike share system for Raleigh. From the reading, what factors should you take into consideration?  Why?  What are the key elements of your bike share plan?  What characteristics will you highlight in your advertising campaign?  Here is a map of bike share systems in the United States.  Does this map suggest that cities have to be a certain size to support a bike share system?  Is there a city in NC currently without a bike share system where you think one could work?  Why? Are there cities in NC where you doubt a bike share system could work?

Here is a population density map of Raleigh.  What role will this play in your plan?

Here are the details of the Raleigh bike share system.  From the reading, what do you think are the positive and negative parts of the bike share system?  Are there things it could do better?

How would you compare a dockless bike share system?

4.  E-Bikes

Here is one of the cheapest highly rateed ebikes offered today.
What do you think of it?  Would you buy it?  What questions does the reading suggest?
Assuming it could go 20 mph, what would a 15 minute city look like with this bike?  (Compared to a bike going 10mph)
Assuming a “regular” bike could be had for $500, how much would you have to ride this bike to make it worthwhile?
